National Cycle Network Route 42

Illustration — photo coming soon

This cycling route traces the western edge of the Cotswolds and Gloucestershire's borderlands, giving you a genuine sense of how the landscape transforms as you pedal along.

40 km 2h 18min moderate

Part of the National Cycle Network, Route 42 offers real variety as you move from rolling hills and green valleys scattered with traditional villages into the more wooded, ancient terrain that borders the Forest of Dean.

The route cleverly combines quiet country lanes with traffic-free paths, many of which follow the beds of old railway lines. That historical connection means you get relatively flat, peaceful stretches where you can actually enjoy the views rather than wrestling with traffic. Starting around Stroud, you can head west through welcoming market towns like Newent, which makes a natural pause point for supplies, refreshments, or a browse through local independent shops. As you continue, the route gradually leads you towards the Forest of Dean's edge and eventually extends to destinations like Chepstow beyond.

What makes this route work well is the pacing. You're not racing through countryside but moving at a speed that lets you take in the changing character of the landscape and pass through genuine local communities. Whether you're after a day ride or a longer journey, Route 42 delivers proper variety without requiring serious fitness or technical skills. It's the kind of ride where you finish the day having seen real Gloucestershire rather than just pedalled through it.
