Walking into this historic market town, you'll find yourself in what many consider the heart of the Cotswolds.

Cirencester has serious historical credentials—it started life as Corinium Dobunnorum, the second-largest Roman settlement in Britain. The Corinium Museum brings that period to life with intricate mosaics and artifacts, and if you want to see the physical remains, the Roman Amphitheatre's earthworks are still visible just outside the town centre.

During the medieval period, Cirencester was dominated by a powerful Augustinian Abbey dedicated to St Mary, one of England's largest. The Dissolution ended that chapter, but the Abbey Grounds remain a peaceful space where you can appreciate how vast the complex once was. The Parish Church of St John Baptist overlooks the market square and is genuinely worth exploring inside for its impressive fan vaulting.

The market square itself is a pleasant place to spend time, with local traders, independent shops, and cafés. The neighbouring area of Stratton extends the town nicely and offers good walks that connect you to the broader Cotswold countryside. This central location makes Cirencester an excellent base for exploring surrounding villages and landscape, whether you're interested in history or simply want somewhere well-positioned to explore from.
