Walking along Lewis Lane in Cirencester, you're standing directly above Corinium Dobunnorum, the second-largest Roman town in Britain after London.
The history here runs deep, though you won't encounter dramatic ruins—instead, the connection to the past reveals itself more quietly. Look carefully and you'll spot earthworks and sections of the old Roman city walls that give a genuine sense of how expansive Corinium actually was.
A short walk away, the Roman Amphitheatre is genuinely worth your time. It's largely a grassy bowl now, but once you're standing in it, you can easily visualize the thousands of people who gathered here for entertainment and spectacle two millennia ago. For a fuller picture of how people actually lived, the Corinium Museum is exceptional. Its collection of mosaics, sculptures, and everyday objects excavated from this site really brings the Roman period to life in tangible ways.
Modern Cirencester functions as a busy market town, so you can weave your historical exploration together with browsing independent shops and grabbing something to eat or drink. The town works well as a base for exploring other parts of the Cotswolds too—Tetbury and Malmesbury are both within easy reach and have their own character worth discovering.
