1950s houses in Leckhampstead This long row of houses (about 30 in groups of three) is actually at an angle to the road. So the verge where the red car is parked gets wider as one goes east until at the far end a separate road has been created.

You'll find Leckhampstead Thicket tucked away in West Berkshire, on the edge of the North Wessex Downs, as a small hamlet within the larger village of Leckhampstead.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow wander, particularly if you're drawn to traditional architecture. The settlement is known for its collection of thatched cottages, many of them listed buildings that showcase the characteristic stone and thatch construction you see throughout the Cotswolds region. Walking here really does give you a genuine feel for rural England as it was, rather than how it's often imagined.

The hamlet has genuine historical layers worth exploring. A Primitive Methodist chapel from 1874 stands nearby, a modest Victorian-era building that tells you something real about community life and religious practice in the area. Leckhampstead village itself went through difficult times but was restored to full village status back in 1864, and that story of recovery is part of the local character.

The surrounding North Wessex Downs landscape makes for excellent walking country, with gentle countryside extending in all directions. When you need refreshment or facilities, the village has a church, pub, and village hall. Larger towns are nearby if you need them, but that's really the point of coming here—it's a quiet spot where you can experience actual village life and authentic rural architecture without the usual tourist crowds.
