This small village sits alongside the River Kennet in Berkshire, just a few miles south of the Cotswolds proper, making it a useful base for exploring the wider region.
Kintbury has developed a strong following among cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts, largely due to its position on the Sustrans National Cycle Network, which connects it to routes heading toward Reading and beyond. The village itself has genuine character, with a working lock on the canal that gives walks along the water a sense of purpose.
The real draw here is outdoor activity. The riverside location means you can wander along pleasant towpaths, and there's a tangible feeling of a working landscape rather than somewhere preserved behind glass. The village has good access to farmland and gentle countryside walks that tend to feel less busy than some other Cotswolds spots. There's a pub or two where you'll find locals, which usually tells you something worth knowing.
Historically, Kintbury developed as a milling and farming community, though it's not a place of grand historical monuments. It works best as a peaceful stopping point if you're cycling through or using it as a base for exploring further afield. The closest larger towns with more facilities are Hungerford to the south and Newbury beyond that, both easily reached by car or bike.
