Jacks Working is a historic manor in the village of Box, located in the southern Cotswolds.
The house itself tells a story through its architecture, with features spanning several centuries and including distinctive Georgian additions that show how it evolved over time.
What makes Box particularly worth visiting is its connection to some remarkable industrial heritage. The village sits at the heart of two major Victorian and historical enterprises: the Box Tunnel, an impressive feat of engineering that cuts through the landscape, and the extensive Bath stone quarries that operated here for generations. That distinctive pale stone you see throughout so many Cotswolds buildings—the one that gives the region its characteristic honey-coloured appearance—came from these quarries right here in Box.
The village itself sits comfortably within rolling countryside, giving you a genuine sense of the rural Cotswolds landscape. The location is well-positioned for exploring further afield. Bath is just a short drive away if you want to see its Roman remains and Georgian terraces, and Corsham, another attractive market town, is equally close by and works well as part of a broader regional exploration.
Do check ahead before planning your visit, as opening times and access to the manor can change. Local tourism information will have the most up-to-date details about what's available when you're planning to go.
