This walking route takes you from the Iron Age fort atop Crickley Hill down through the Cotswold uplands to Gustav Holst's birthplace in Cheltenham, combining landscape and cultural history in one moderate day walk.
Beginning at Crickley Hill Country Park, you're immediately rewarded with sweeping views across the Severn Vale. The hill itself tells a story stretching back millennia, with archaeological evidence showing it was occupied in prehistoric times and later fortified during the Iron Age. From there, the path descends through characteristic rolling terrain, following what's known as the Gustav Holst Way. You'll experience the changing landscape as you move from the escarpment down towards the spa town below. The walk concludes at the Holst Birthplace Museum in Cheltenham, where you can explore the life and work of the composer best known for 'The Planets'. The whole route works well as a morning or afternoon walk, giving you time to either grab refreshments in Cheltenham afterwards or push on to nearby Gloucester. It's the kind of walk that doesn't demand serious fitness but rewards you with both exercise and the kind of historical context that makes a landscape make sense.
