This historic market town sits where the River Avon and the River Severn meet, just off the Cotswolds' western edge.
The Abbey is what draws most people here—a magnificent Norman structure that's dominated the skyline for centuries, and stepping inside gives you a real sense of its religious significance across the ages. The grand nave, chapels, and impressive tower are all worth your time. Beyond that, the medieval streets reward a good wander, lined with timber-framed buildings that genuinely reflect how old this place is. You'll find plenty of independent shops and restaurants scattered throughout, so there's no shortage of places to eat and browse. If history interests you, the surrounding area was where the Battle of Tewkesbury happened in 1471, a turning point in the Wars of the Roses. The rivers make the town particularly appealing if you enjoy being outside—there are good walking routes along the water, and you can also take boat trips to see everything from a different angle. From here it's straightforward to reach Gloucester and Cheltenham for a day trip, making it a useful base if you're exploring more of Gloucestershire.
