Just outside Banbury, this woodland reserve offers a genuine escape into nature without needing to venture far from town.

The mix of mature broadleaf trees alongside sections planted in the 1990s as part of a community initiative creates varied habitats worth exploring at your own pace, whether you're after a proper walk or simply want to be surrounded by trees and fresh air.

You'll spot woodland birds throughout the year, and if you're fortunate, a woodpecker working away at the bark. Spring brings something particularly special: the forest floor carpets itself in bluebells, transforming the whole place into something quite striking. Running through the reserve is a disused railway embankment, a remnant of the area's transport history that adds interest to your route.

The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust manages the reserve carefully, so it remains in good condition for both the wildlife that depends on it and visitors like you. The woodland works well as a couple of hours out if you're based in Banbury, or as a stop-off if you're exploring the surrounding villages such as Little Bourton. There's something restorative about walking beneath the canopy here, even if you're only a short distance from town.
