Dunkirk Mill Ponds

in Nailsworth

Illustration — photo coming soon

Dunkirk Mill Ponds sits just outside Nailsworth and offers a peaceful retreat into nature without having to venture far from civilisation.

The site consists of several rewilded mill ponds, remnants of the area's textile manufacturing heritage when water power from local streams drove the mills that once defined these valleys. Today, the water attracts plenty of wildlife, making it rewarding for anyone keen on a bit of nature spotting. You'll likely spot dragonflies darting across the surface, various waterfowl, and a range of plants growing along the banks. The walking is gentle and contemplative, ideal if you just want to clear your head for an hour or so. From here, you can branch out onto other paths that lead deeper into the surrounding valleys if you fancy extending your visit, or head straight back into Nailsworth for a coffee and a browse of its independent shops. Stroud, with its established market and creative community, is only a short drive away, so this reserve works well as part of a broader exploration of central Cotswolds.
