Located near Willington alongside the River Avon, this nature reserve offers a genuinely different experience from typical Cotswolds village exploration.
The landscape consists mainly of wetlands and open meadow, providing the kind of peaceful space where you can spend a couple of hours watching the wildlife that actually inhabits the area rather than viewing preserved attractions.
There's considerable seasonal variety throughout the year if you're willing to observe closely. Reeds along the riverbank support various bird species, while the meadows host changing plant communities depending on the time of year. For birdwatchers this is genuinely rewarding territory, though it's equally valuable as a straightforward walk when you simply want some quiet time away from busier spots.
The reserve takes its name from its past. Industrial activity once centered around a mill on this land, long since disappeared, which gives the landscape an interesting historical dimension. What you're walking through today has developed from that earlier use, worth reflecting on as you explore.
If you're staying in Stratford-upon-Avon for the day, this reserve works well as a natural counterpoint to the town's historical attractions. Evesham is also within reach if you're exploring the wider area. It's a place that doesn't immediately draw attention, but it rewards a visit with genuine value.
