Burgess Field is a nature reserve located just outside Wytham village, within easy reach of Oxford.

It's the kind of place where you can escape the city's bustle without traveling far, making it perfect if you want a break from urban surroundings but don't have hours to spare.

The reserve consists mainly of open grassland that's actively managed to support a wide range of wildflowers and insects. Visit in different seasons and you'll notice the changes—butterflies moving between blooms in summer, various bird calls from the hedgerows and surrounding trees throughout the year. There's something rewarding about spending time here, whether you're on a proper wildlife walk, doing some quiet observation, or simply sitting down to absorb the peace.

Burgess Field doesn't offer dramatic historical features, but its value lies in what it does now: it functions as an important refuge for local wildlife and contributes meaningfully to the biodiversity of this eastern edge of the Cotswolds. The reserve is straightforward to access, so it works well as part of a wider day exploring Oxford or the Cotswolds borderlands. Just wear decent footwear—the ground can be muddy after rain—and you'll get the most from your time here.
