The British National Fencing Museum sits in Gaurford, just a short drive from Great Malvern, and serves as Britain's official repository for fencing artefacts and information.
If you want to understand how fencing evolved from ancient dueling practices and gentlemanly combat into the Olympic sport it is today, this is the place to do it.
The collection is genuinely impressive. You'll see historical weapons spanning foils, épées, and sabres, along with the protective gear and training equipment that have transformed over centuries. The displays chart the development of the sport through the stories of prominent British fencers, the founding and legacies of clubs across the country, and the key moments that shaped fencing into one of Britain's longest-standing martial arts. It's the technical skill, discipline, and tradition behind it all that makes the museum so absorbing.
The location makes it easy to combine with other things in the area. Great Malvern itself is worth a wander for its Victorian architecture and spa town history, and the Malvern Hills nearby offer excellent walking routes with sweeping views across the landscape. The town has plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can grab something to eat, so you can easily spend a full day exploring the region without running short of things to do.
