This small village sits on the River Lambourn in West Berkshire, just a few miles south of the main Cotswolds area, making it a straightforward addition to a wider trip.

Most visitors come here because of one remarkable discovery: a fourth-century Roman mosaic that turned up during excavation work in 2017.

The mosaic is genuinely striking once you understand what you're looking at. Over six metres long, it depicts a scene from classical mythology showing Bellerophon confronting the Chimera at the court of either Iobates or Proteus. The craftsmanship is intricate, with hundreds of tiny tiles creating detailed figures and patterns. It's a window into the wealth and cultural sophistication of Roman Britain, suggesting someone important lived here.

The mosaic is now held securely offsite and shown by appointment through the local archaeological society, so do check ahead before visiting. The village itself is worth exploring though—it has genuine character with its stone cottages and a working mill. The river provides pleasant walking routes, and you're within easy reach of larger towns like Wantage and the broader Cotswolds attractions.

It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity about local history rather than offering obvious tourist infrastructure, which means visiting feels genuinely exploratory and rewarding for those willing to dig a little deeper.
