Bourton

This Gloucestershire village sits on the River Windrush in one of the Cotswolds' flattest valleys, which gives it a distinctly different character from the steeper stone villages scattered across the region.

The river runs straight through the centre, with wide shallow stretches that become something of a natural meeting place during warmer weather—you'll regularly spot families and visitors wading through on summer afternoons. It's very much part of village life here.

The Conservation Area designation has meant the village centre retains its original character well. Stone buildings and traditional architecture line the streets as you explore, and there's a respectable mix of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants along the main road. If you're interested in motor racing history, there's a small museum dedicated to the subject that makes a worthwhile stop.

Bourton works particularly well as a base for seeing more of the region. It's around fifteen minutes' drive from Cheltenham and sits reasonably close to other significant villages like Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh. The surrounding countryside has several straightforward walking routes, and the relatively flat terrain makes it more accessible than many of the hillier Cotswolds locations. With a population of around three thousand, it has proper facilities and services without feeling overly busy, though it does draw more visitors during peak season.
