in Mollington

Illustration — photo coming soon

This walking trail around Cropredy takes you through the landscapes where the English Civil War played out on the ground.

4.1 km 50 min easy

The Battle of Cropredy Bridge happened here in 1644, when King Charles I's Royalist forces met the Parliamentarians in combat. Following the path, you walk the same fields and byways where that confrontation unfolded, which makes it easy to picture the tension and movement of that day while you're surrounded by the rolling Oxfordshire countryside.

The walk itself is accessible and fits nicely into a few hours of outdoor time. You'll pass near Cropredy Bridge, which was central to the fighting, and follow the gentle bends of the River Cherwell along the way. Once you've finished, the village of Cropredy is right there for a rest stop, and there are several good pubs for refreshment. If you need more facilities or want somewhere to stay, Banbury is a short drive away and has all the usual market town amenities including shops, cafes, and places to sleep. It's an effective way to combine a pleasant country walk with direct contact to an important moment in English history.
