Barnwood Roman cemetery

in Churchdown

This suburb of Gloucester sits on the remains of a significant Roman cemetery that served Glevum, the thriving Roman city that developed into modern Gloucester.

Early twentieth-century excavations revealed substantial evidence of burial practices here, with some bodies cremated and others inhumed, accompanied by pottery, coins, and personal possessions that offer genuine insight into life nearly two thousand years ago.

The cemetery itself has largely vanished beneath contemporary housing and roads, so there's nothing to see on the ground today. However, the archaeological story remains accessible. The Gloucester City Museum houses an excellent collection of artefacts recovered from the site, with displays that effectively explain what these burial customs reveal about Roman beliefs and social structures. If you're interested in understanding Gloucester's Roman heritage, a visit to the museum becomes worthwhile for exploring this particular location.

Being part of greater Gloucester, Barnwood connects easily with the city's other attractions. You can view Roman remains in the town centre, visit the notable cathedral, and learn about what was once one of Britain's most important Roman settlements. While you won't be able to walk around the cemetery itself, the recovered artefacts and museum interpretations bring the Roman story here to life in meaningful ways. The site makes particular sense as part of a broader exploration of Gloucester's significant place in Romano-British history.
