Penwood is a small place, and that's rather the point. Within a couple of miles of the village you'll find around seven places to eat and drink, five to visit, three offering activities, plus a shop, a place to stay and Penwood Forest for services — enough to fill a day without ever feeling that you're queuing for it. The lanes here run between woodland and open country, and two long-distance routes pass close by, so walkers and cyclists tend to arrive with muddy boots and leave with a good appetite. It suits visitors who like their days unhurried and their directions given by hand.
A good few hours might begin on foot, picking up a stretch of The Brenda Parker Way or riding a section of King Alfred's Way, both of which thread through the countryside around the village. Follow that with a wander at The Garden House, or spend a quieter half-hour in Monks Garden, where the planting rewards slow looking. Then walk or drive the short distance to the Carnarvon Arms for a late lunch, a pint and a sit-down before you head home.
