Chieveley sits in gently rolling country a short hop from the main roads, which makes it an easy place to break a journey or to base yourself for a slower half-day. It isn't a village that trades on crowds or ticket queues; within roughly two miles you'll find six places to eat and drink, a couple of shops, two spots worth visiting and one venue for events and culture, and that modest count is rather the point. Lanes run out between fields and beech hangers, the pubs are the kind where walkers and locals share the bar, and the pace lets you decide how much you want to fit in.

A good few hours might begin at Bussock Camp, an ancient earthwork that repays a slow circuit and a look at the views around it, before you head to the Winterbourne Arms for a proper sit-down lunch in the neighbouring valley. Afterwards, Hillier Garden Centre gives you somewhere to browse plants, tools and gifts under cover whatever the weather. If you'd rather eat later, The Crab is worth keeping in reserve for a longer, fish-focused meal at the end of the day.
