This small village sits in a quiet corner of Gloucestershire, roughly four miles east of Cirencester, making it accessible for a short excursion from the larger market town.
With a population of just 75, Ampney St Peter offers the kind of genuine rural experience that draws people to the Cotswolds in the first place.
The village takes its name from its parish church, dedicated to St Peter, which speaks to the area's long Christian heritage. The settlement developed along the Ampney Brook, a modest watercourse that flows through the surrounding countryside and connects this village to its neighbours, Ampney Crucis and Ampney St Mary, forming a small cluster of settlements with shared history and character.
Locally, people still sometimes refer to the area by its older name, Easington, a reminder of how these villages have evolved over centuries. There's little in terms of commercial attractions here, which is rather the point—visitors come to experience the slower pace of genuine village life and to walk through landscapes that have changed remarkably little over generations.
It works best as part of a broader exploration of the Ampney villages or as a peaceful base for countryside walks. The setting offers a real sense of how rural Cotswold communities function today, away from the busier tourist routes. Bring proper walking boots and a willingness to appreciate understated beauty.
